Fred Minier Howell

Obituary

Fred Minier Howell, 80, of Merritt Island, Florida, passed away Sunday January 15, 2012.


He was born in Buffalo, New York, the youngest of five siblings. He was the third consecutive generation to graduate from Cornell University (in 1951), earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He would later go on to earn a Masters Degree in Business Administration.


Fred served with the Navy during the Korean War on the USS Toucan, earning the rank of Lieutenant JG before being Honorably Discharged in 1955. He continued to serve in the Navy Reserve until 1966.


For his entire civilian life, Fred worked as an engineer for many companies. He garnered several U.S. patents, notably one for a portable UPC bar code printer.


Fred moved to Brevard County in 1977 and after moving away for a time, retired to the area in 1986.


He is survived by his son Gordon (Jana) Howell of Prague, Czech Republic; son Jeffrey Howell and Susan Emond of New Hampshire, grandchildren Jennifer Howell and Christopher Howell of New Hampshire, Alexander Howell of Prague, Czech Republic; brother-in-law Charles R. (Sylvia) Dart of Fremont, Indiana; and nephew William Dart of Newburgh, Indiana.
